THE STREAM Opens October 18th!

THE STREAM going to Regal Cinemas Nationwide!

Some really exciting news coming from Dreaming Tree Films! Last summer I had the privilege of working as production designer with the kids from The Boys & Girls Clubs of America, on the feature film called "The Stream". It's now official that it will launch on select screens at Regal Cinemas nationwide. Here's the official release...

It was a truly amazing experience to work on this film. Our task was to turn multiple rooms, interiors, and outdoor spaces back to 1981. A challenging task, but one I feel my age gave me an advantage. I was a teenager myself during the period of this story. My memories of my own, and my friend's houses in the early 80's were burned deep into my brain. Let's just say...the design sensibilities of that time were not the most alluring. We're talking the age of brown paneling!

Here's the bedroom we created for the lead characters Ernest & Bobby, played by Jacob Williams and Michael Capperella...

And here's the parent's room played by Kelly Rutherford and Christopher Gorham. Doesn't this room bring back some decor nightmares!? lol

 

 

One of the most challenging tasks was to find the cars. In some cases, I actually chased cars down I passed on the road. Two cars that I managed to get stopped (and I not killed) will appear in the film.

This film is a great adventure for families, and a great cause at the same time. A large portion of the proceeds of ticket and DVD sales will benefit The Boys & Girls Clubs of America. And the kids from the Clubs helped to make the film. This made working on this film a truly special and wonderful experience. And, some pretty big Hollywood peeps stepped up to help the cause.

Needless to say, it was an experience of a lifetime. I feel so grateful to have taken a part in getting it made. I hope you go out and see this very family friendly coming of age film this coming October. Below is the list of theaters and dates. Let's support our kids, and have some great family fun doing it! Dream Project: The Stream

During this past summer, I had the incredible fortune to work as set designer on a dream project with Dreaming Tree Films, and The Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

This new feature film called 'The Stream" is set to be released this coming Winter 2013, and the excitement is really building now!

 

 

Take a peak behind the scenes of The Stream - a family comedy created Fresh Films style with teens from Boys & Girls Clubs behind the camera. A huge portion of every movie ticket, DVD and download will be donated back to BGCA.

Dream Project: The Stream

It's a wrap!

This past Saturday the filming for the movie "The Stream" wrapped up. The virtual film is in the virtual can! Working on this project for Dreaming Tree Films, has simply been one of the most wonderful experiences in my career. I met so many amazing and talented people throughout the entire six week journey. The whole cast and crew even started to feel like an extended family.

The kids from The Boys & Girls Clubs of America did an outstanding job working right along side the pros to get this movie made. They got to see and take part in every single aspect of the process. What an awesome experience for everyone involved!

Dreaming Tree Films expects to be able to release the "The Stream" in the Winter of 2013. This coming of age film will be fun, funny, adventurous, and will take you back in time to the early 1980's. One of the best things is a large part of the proceeds will benefit The Boys & Girls Clubs. So cool! I can't wait to see this movie! 

Director Estlin Feigley did a truly amazing job realizing his vision, and getting this feature film made. I owe him and his team a huge debt of gratitude for allowing me to be part of it, and helping to create the look of this movie.

Besides the incredibly talented young actors and future stars like Jacob Williams, Michael Capparella, Noura Jost, C.J. Diel, Madison Kaplan, and Tyler Burke, there were also some established Hollywood Stars in the film as well. Mario Lopez, Kelly Rutherford, and Christopher Gorham all played roles, and meeting them was a real cool experience.

Of all the experiences on this project, the one that will be the most lasting, is the time I got to spend with my son. Working as my assistant on set, he made me so proud! And we now have some awesome memories to last us forever! To document the experience, I put together the video below for him to take to school next month. It will give you a real behind the scenes look.

 

I'm so looking forward to seeing everyone again at the premier. Until then, I will miss you all!

These last couple of weeks working as Set Designer for the feature film "The Stream", have been a complete whirlwind, pressure packed, and so much fun! The project started with rolling two bedrooms, a hallway, kitchen, and dining room back to1981. The main characters in the film are "Ernest" and "Bobby". Their room complete with bunk beds and street signs, needed to reflect their love of Star Wars and all the typical trappings of a "coming of age" 13 year old boy and his younger brother sharing a room.

I tried to create a typical boy's bedroom from that era. Complete with roll down shades, wood paneling, a record player with cassette deck, and Star Wars toys everywhere. I tried my best to make it look lived in and real. The continuity was always a challenge as I had to research each and every item to make sure it existed on or before 1981.

Here's a look behind the scenes as Dreaming Tree Films Director, Estlin Feigley, goes over the upcoming scenes with actors Jacob Williams who plays "Ernest", and Michael Capperella who plays "Bobby" in the movie. As the crew sets up for the shoot, you'll see It takes a lot of people and equipment to film a small room! lol

 

I also needed to turn back time on Ernest and Bobby's parents room. The furniture was already consistent with the times, so I only had to decorate around it. A floral bedspread, a TV complete with extended antenna and manual channel dial, and a period push button phone were key items to paint the scene.

It wasn't so much about making them pretty, it was more about making them average middle class and authentic. I was having flashbacks the whole time of the decor in the homes of my friends and family back then. The decorating reality of the 70's and 80's was one of transition. Not my taste at all. So it was really fun to step out of my normal vision for interior space.

The entire process has been such a cool learning experience. The amount of effort made by many people to bring so many elements together at the same moment, is totally inspiring to be part of. Not to mention the participation of The Boy's & Girl's Clubs of America in the making of this feature film. The Dreaming Tree Films Foundation is an amazing cause. They partner the pros with students on each film production. It's the learning experience of a lifetime for these young aspiring film makers!

 

There's also some real star power in "The Stream" as well. This past week I got to meet and work with both Kelly Rutherford and Christopher Gorham. They're playing "Glen" and "Maggie", the parents of Ernest and Bobby in the film. My part was running into the kitchen between each take of one scene to reset the dishes in the sink that Maggie was washing and drying as she was talking with Glen. Here's a look behind the camera at another kitchen scene with them. If you look closely at the picture frame on the wall, you'll notice it's right up against the thermostat. I placed it there to cover a bank of modern flush switches.The thermostat was out of frame.

 Outside of placing picture frames over modern switch plates, and decorating rooms, I've also assumed the role of Prop Master as well. I was given the task of finding several motorized items for the sets. First I had to find a working lawn mower that was from 1981 or older. Luckily I was able to find a guy willing to rent his red 1980 Snapper. Also on the list was a running dirt bike for the movie's bully named "Wyatt". And, the most challenging task of all was the cars! There are several scenes that required cars from the era. I don't think I've ever done more research in my life! Not to mention the emails, phone calls, and leaving notes on people's classic rides in parking lots. I even walked into a restaurant and interrupted someones dinner to discuss using their car in the film.

The above photo shows the cars I managed to assemble for a mall parking lot scene. This was a really fun day! The set was behind the Granite Run mall in Media, PA. I met the drivers on the opposite side of the building. When it was time to arrive with cars, I rolled up to the set in my own car, and I asked the producer Devan Saber, "Have any cars shown up yet?" She looked at me in shock and said..."You were supposed to bring them here!" So I said, OK, I'll go look for them. About five minutes later, here's a video of our grand entrance...

The work is not over yet. There's still about 2 weeks of filming left to go. Right now I'm search of more cars for some street scenes, and an ice cream truck. Do you know of any classic ice cream trucks from 1981 laying around? The search continues...
